Big Brothers, Big Sisters

ISC 4-Ramla
Big Brothers Big Sisters: This was what I had hoped would be my major project of ISC. I had wanted to create a support system for the many children in Ramla who are missing strong, confident, and positive role models in their lives. This program, which is a very well known one in the States, provides boys and girls with a one-on-one "big brother/sister" to spend time with them doing everyday activities (sports, homework, grocery shopping, reading, going to the movies, museums, hikes, etc) so they grow to be a part of each others lives and the child has a substitute older sibling/parent. Usually, the child comes from a home that lacks a mother or a father or both, or has one or both parents but they are not a positive influence or role model for their child. For one of the activities, I arranged to have four young Ethiopian girls who live in Ramla meet with four 16 year old girls who will interact with the girls for an evening. There were pre-arranged activities, by myself, for the eight of them to do collectively (introduction and ice breaker games, scavenger hunt, pizza, and a movie). Afterwards, we will see which girls connected with each other before we pair them up in two's. I am very optimistic about the program continuing, because it is something that can easily be taken over by future ISCers and after my time is up in Ramla.
